GIVING
We believe there are several areas into which the Bible either commands or encourages giving. However, giving should never be out of a sense of compulsion because the heart that the gift is given with is of greatest importance. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 9:7 New International Version “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver”. The issues of giving the Bible speaks about are:
Tithing
This is regular giving into the life of the local church. Tithing under the law represented a tenth but the principle of tithing pre-dated the giving of the law. The New Testament addresses this issue of regular giving to God and distinguishes it from giving to special needs. Paul, speaking of the Macedonian church’s giving to a special offering says “For I testify that they gave as much as they were able and even beyond their ability.” 2 Corinthians 8:3-5 New International Version. We believe it is the responsibility of every Christian to tithe into their local Church Malachi 3:9-10 New International Version and in a New Testament context of 1 Corinthians 16:2 New International Version we should be guided as, “On the first day of every week each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income.”
Offerings for Special Needs
We believe there may be occasions when special needs arise where the Church should be encouraged to give over and above that which is being tithed, as was the case recorded in 2 Corinthians 8-9 New International Version.
Giving to Other Ministries
Philippians 4:10-20 New International Version records Christians supporting a ministry not directly related to their local Church. Again these gifts were given over and above tithing.
Alms
In various parts of Scripture it speaks about our responsibility to individuals who are in need, and we believe on an individual basis it is right to give into these situations over and above our tithing. (James 2:15-16New King James Version).
Gift Aid – Covenanting
Many Churches have what is known as a covenant scheme while here in Gateway Elim, Ammanford we adopt the Gift Aid process. This means that Taxpayers are able to make their giving go even further, at no cost to themselves, both on regular and one-off gifts to the Church. The Treasure liaises with the Finance officer at Headquarters to ensure we get the appropriate ‘rebate’ from the Taxman.
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:7 New International Version (NIV)
